I’m borderline obsessed with arts festivals. I’ve been going to them since I was a kid and they’re always fantastic places to not only people watch but also support your local artisans, which has always been a huge thing for me. Even though I’ve been in Dallas two years now which is crazy, I still hadn’t been to the Deep Ellum Arts Festival so I made it a point to go this year.
And I am SO glad I did. I picked up a couple prints — one for my boyfriend that was of Johnny Cash and another of a fun dinosaur wearing a crown. I love getting to know local artists and how they create their mediums. It’s always so fun and they, in my experience, always get so excited that people are actually still investing in the local art scene.
But selfishly, I support local art because I want my walls in my home to be covered in art. Art that you can’t find just anywhere and that has a story. Which is probably why I always try to pick up something while I’m traveling to remind me of the places I’ve been.
It’s so much fun, too, to explore a part of your town that you don’t get to see all that often. And I’m definitely trying to make more of a concentrated effort to go exploring in my own back yard this year. Unfortunately, this arts festival has ended but I’m sure it’ll be back next year and you should definitely check it out if you’re in Dallas!
